GLR News Update

Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – As tax day approaches, authorities say IRS-based phone scams are continuing.

Police in the Copper Country say they have been receiving reports of recent calls being made to individuals by people claiming to be police officers working for the IRS and that the victim may be arrested if they don’t pay their back taxes.

Houghton City Police say the caller will instruct the victim to send money to a specific address via MoneyGram or Western Union or be arrested.

Authorities say the IRS does not contact people over the telephone, nor do they use any police agency to collect back taxes.

If you receive such a phone call, hang up and then contact your local law enforcement agency.
