The Marquette County Board of Commissioners welcomed a new commissioner last night. Steve Pence, who was selected by the board to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of District 1 Commissioner Jim Cihak, was sworn in to fill the remainder of the term. Cihak, who had served on the county board for 11 years, stepped down last January. In other business, the board gave its support to a plan by Humboldt Township to restore and reuse a two mile portion of railroad near M-95 and US-41 for business use. If fully developed, the railroad would be used for shipping support for mining operations in the area.
Negaunee City Police are continuing their investigation into a single-vehicle rollover accident yesterday morning that cllaimed the life of an Ishpeming man. Police say a ’95 Mitsubishi Montero, driven by 46-year-old Terrence Lyons, was eastbound on Maas Street about a three quarters-of-a-mile west of Forge Road around 11-am when it veered out of control, went off of the north side of the roadway and rolled over. Lyons was ejected from the vehicle and attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say they believe alcohol was a factor in the accident and it remains under investigation.
A Marquette woman is facing sentencing in late April after pleading guilty to stealing over 20-thousand dollars from an elderly Negaunee woman. 52-year-old Alice Kurian plead guilty in Marquette County Circuit Court to stealing the money from her grandmother. Police say Kurian made 10 withdrawals from the 94 year old woman’s account over the last year. Kurian will be sentenced on April 27th and faces up to 10 years in prison and may have to pay restitution of up to three times the amount stolen.
Authorities in the Copper Country are looking for a walkaway from a jail work crew. The Houghton County Sheriff’s Depatment says 28-year-old Jeremy Walter Nordstrom of Calumet walked away from the crew yesterday afternoon around 1:20. Nordstrom is s a white male 6’2″ tall, weighs 178 pounds with blond hair and blue eyes. He is a minimum security inmate, has no history of violence. and was serving a probation violation on a larceny charge. Anyone with any information about his whereabouts is asked to call the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department or your local law enforcement agency.
