The Negaunee City Fire Department says a home in Negaunee was completely destroyed by fire yesterday evening.  Firefighters were called out around 5pm to a residence at 118 East County Road.  The fire apparently broke out in the rear of the house near the building’s main entrance.  High winds fanned the flames and pushed the fire inside the home.  A woman and her dog were inside the home when the fire broke out and they were able to escape unharmed.  The name of the woman has not been released and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Ishpeming City Police responded to a three-car accident in Ishpeming yesterday afternoon.  The accident happened just before 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Second Street when a silver Buick sedan apparently ran a red light and collided with two other vehicles.  The driver had to be extricated from the sedan and was taken to Bell Hospital. Traffic in the right westbound lane of U.S. 41 was rerouted as authorities responded to the scene.  No names have been released and the investigation into the accident is continuing.

Crews are continuing with the demolition of the former Bell Hospital building in Ishpeming.  The demolition of the former hospital was begun after the expiration of a three-year contract between the hospital and an area contractor.  The demolition of the structure is expected to continue over the next month-and-a-half.  The original Bell Hospital facility was the oldest hospital in Michigan at ninety years old.  Reports say Ishpeming city officials are considering turning the cleared property over to the Ishpeming High School.

Michigan Tech University graduates’ caps and gowns will be green at the University’s spring commencement in Houghton on Saturday, April 28th.  They will be colored black as usual, but they’ll be green in spirit.  University officials say the caps and gowns will be made of Repreve, which is 100 percent recyclable yarn made from plastic water bottles.  The material is soft and breathable, doesn’t wrinkle and has a flat rather than shiny look.  It takes 27 plastic water bottles to make the yarn for one gown, so with about 1,000 graduates at Michigan Tech this spring, 27,000 empty bottles will be put to use instead of into the landfill.  After commencement, graduates who wish to do so, can donate their caps and gowns to be recycled again.
