The trial continued for a 45-year old Kingsford man accused of the murder of Joyce Johnson, who was scheduled to testify at his criminal trial last year. David Levack is charged with open murder, felony murder, first degree home invasion and witness intimidation in Iron County Trial Court. Testamony from residents around Johnson’s home and expert witnesses were heard yesterday in court, with witnesses closely associated with Levack and Johnson expect to testify today. If convicted, Levack faces a maximum penalty of life in prison.
According to Michigan State Police, around 9:30 Tuesday night, a young bull moose was hit and killed in Baraga County on US-41 near Parent Lake. The two to three year old bull moose was hit by George Cook of Bitely with his pick-up truck. Cook was not injured. Meat from the moose that was salvaged was given to the Baraga County Food Bank.
The 27-year old who walked away from a work camp last month was in Houghton County District Court yesterday facing escape from jail and larceny charges. Jeremy Nordstrom was taken into custody two weeks after walking away from the work camp and was sent back to jail. Nordstrom waived his preliminary hearing and was bound over to circuit court.
A plea deal has been resolved in the criminal case against the owner of the Backroom Obsessions. Police seized several dangerous items, including bath salts, from the store last December. The owner, 46-year-old Michael Jestila will permanently close the building, pay the Marquette Police Department $20,000, and never do business in Marquette County and in return will have a criminal charge, a nuisance complaint and two forfeiture actions against him dropped. Jestila is still facing similar charges in Houghton.
Seasonal weight restrictions will be lifted on all roads under the jurisdiction of the Marquette County Road Commission beginning 7:00 a.m., Monday April 30th. Until Monday, May 14th, only normal legal loads will be allowed. After this date overloads will be allowed by permit only.
