A Lansing-based group of association executives is calling for changes to Michigan’s term limit restrictions on legislators.  State lawmakers are currently prohibited from serving more than six years in the House and eight years in the Senate.  But the Michigan Society of Association Executives has completed a study that says term limits have led to costlier elections, less leadership and less institutional knowledge.  The group calls it a “starting point” in the effort to “offer a research-based summary of term limits impact.”  The organization admits no “term limit” state has voted to eliminate the limits, although some states have “extended” the limits, and that could be an option for Michigan.

Michigan state police troopers joined forces with state troopers from five other states last week to combat drug trafficking and impaired driving on Interstates 70 and 75.  The three-day effort, on May 3rd, 4th, and 5th, resulted in 78 arrests for impaired driving and 40 criminal cases across the six states which also included Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Indiana.  Enforcement in Michigan focused on the I-75 corridor from Saginaw County to Monroe County.  State troopers made over 300 traffic stops during the enforcement period resulting in 26 criminal complaints and nine arrests, including one arrest for impaired driving.

The Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee has questions about how information was leaked about a thwarted Al-Qaeda bomb plot.  Republican Mike Rogers of Michigan says he think the leak kept U.S. Intelligence officials from learning more about the operations of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.  It was revealed this week that U.S. Intelligence has helped foil an attempt to blow up a U.S.-bound airliner.  This latest plot was linked to an Al-Qaeda operative in Yemen.  The FBI is examining an explosive device designed by the operative that may be similar to the one used in the 2009 “Underwear Bomber” attempt on a jet bound for Detroit.
