The Miners and Patriots line the court as the National Anthem plays prior to tip-off.

Westwood, Michigan– The Miners strike first as they take a 2-0 lead in the first minute of the first quarter. Kayla Hakala drains a 3-pointer on the ensuing Negaunee possession, putting the Miners up 5-0. The Miners have jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game. Westwood breaks the Negaunee run with a lay-up, to cut the Miner lead to 9-2. With 4:48 left in the first quarter, Rosalie Anderson splits a pair from the charity strip to put the Miners ahead 10-2. The Patriots have cut the Miner lead to 10-8, after falling behind 9-0. Westwood has taken a 13-10 lead with under two minutes left in the opening quarter. Ashley Veale scores to put the Miners back on top with 35 seconds left in the first.

First quarter:

Negaunee: 14       Westwood: 13

The Patriots hit a 3-pointer while getting fouled, to get the first points of the second quarter. Westwood converts the 4-point play to take a 17-14 lead. Rosalie Anderson makes a pair of free throws to cut the Westwood lead to 17-16, with just over five minutes to play in the second quarter. Halfway through the second quarter, Westwood holds a 19-16 advantage. With under two minutes to play in the first half the Miners still trail 19-16 as they are struggling to score against the Patriots defense.

Both teams traded leads all night but Negaunee ended up pulling away in the final minutes.

Negaunee: 16       Westwood: 19

Ashley Veale scores on an offensive rebound, to pull Negaunee within one; 19-18, on the first play of the second half. The Miners score again to take a 20-19 lead, as they are finding their offensive early in the third quarter. With under four minutes to play in the third, the Patriots hold a 24-20 lead. The Miners score, cutting the Westwood lead to 23-22. Both teams are struggling to find buckets as the score remains 23-22 with two minutes remaining in the third quarter. The Miners hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds of the third to recapture the lead.

The Miners used clutch free throws late in the fourth quarter to wrap up the win.

 

Third quarter:

Negaunee: 25      Westwood: 23

The Patriots score first in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 25-25. Rosalie Anderson responds with a drive down the lane and a lay-up to put Negaunee back up by two. Kayla Hakala drains a 3-pointer to put the Miners ahead 30-25. The five point lead is their biggest since the first quarter. With 4:32 remaining, the Miners are clinging to a 3-point lead. Negaunee drops another bucket in to take a 32-28 lead with just over three minutes to play. The Miners build a six point lead, as they look to fend off the Patriots in the final minutes. With 1:23 left the Miners are holding the ball on offense as they look to play keep away from the Patriots. Westwood gets fouled and makes the shot as they cut the Miner lead to three points with under 25 seconds to play. Negaunee splits a pair from the line and rebound the miss on the second shot as they hold a four point lead and keep possession of the ball. Anderson hits a pair from the line to seal the game for Negaunee.

The Miners use a late fourth quarter run to pull ahead of Westwood and pick up a conference win as they improve to 14-3.

Neguanee: 37      Westwood: 31
