Health Tip – Aug. 10 – Stay Safe and Healthy at the Fair

880

The Marquette County Fair opens this week, an event that many of us prepare for and look forward to all year. Here are a few reminders so that you and your family will have a safe and healthy time at the fair.

The temperature may be rather warm with many of the attractions out in the sun. Drink more fluids, regardless of your activity level. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink. Don’t drink liquids that contain caffeine, alcohol or large amounts of sugar as these actually cause you to lose more body fluid. Also, avoid very cold drinks, because they can cause stomach cramps.

Try to rest often in shady areas. Don’t forget the sunscreen. Remember the very young and the elderly are more prone to heat related illnesses.

Remember too, animals at the fair are not always friendly. The petting zoo is the place to let the kids touch the animals. Otherwise, make sure youngsters keep their fingers or their hands out of cages.

Don’t forget the hand sanitizer. With all the people touching the rides, using picnic tables and petting the animals, there are a lot of germs out there.

Let’s be safe and have fun at the fair!
