Marquette, Mi – May 24, 2014 – GIVE THE DAY THE RESPECT IT DESERVES From “Decoration Day” to “Memorial Day” the tradition of honoring those who die in battle goes back to ancient times. Placing flowers on graves and solemnly honoring their sacrifice has a place in every society in history. Many people believe that we are no longer giving the day the respect it deserves. We have a duty to not only give proper respect, but to spread the message… and by our example inspire others to do the same.
One of my family traditions is to watch the PBS special on Memorial Day. If you watch this annual show, you will probably never want to miss another one. If you can’t be home to watch the special live, please set your DVR- VCR- or whatever technology you use to record the show and watch it. To me… it is the most appropriate and inspiring way to spend the day.
When I was young (A Long Time Ago) schools took time to explain to students the importance of the day – On Memorial Day. Once the day was moved to create a long weekend for federal workers, the day became (for some) just another day off. Veterans and Patriots of all ages still remember the reason for the day… I hope some day we get back to the tradition of teaching our children our history and why we celebrate. We are not educating our students… we are simply indoctrinating them.
Today, I simply played songs that I believe portray the meaning of the day, and read poems about the day. Many of these are linked on the facebook page – facebook.com/intherightmindmqt – If You’re not already of “friend” of the show – GET IN YOUR RIGHT MIND AND BECOME ONE! Then you can comment during the show… and all week long!
