Negaunee, Mich – The 2011 Mid Peninsula football season kicks off on Friday August 26th as the Maize and Blue entertain Manistique in the traditional conference opener for both schools.
Head Coach Paul Jocobson starts his 12th season as the head of a team that has had tremendous success over the course of those dozen years, included a 13 – 9 record in the post season. In 2010 Negaunee scored what many consider to be the upset of the entire MHSAA Playoffs; by getting in to the post-season with a 5 – 4 record and then defeating unbeaten Elk Rapids in the playoff opener 22 – 15 at Elk Rapids.
According to coach Jacobson, this years edition of the Negaunee Miners has a good balance of experience and youth. “We’ve got some good skill players coming back with Tanner Uren at Quarterback and Tyler Beaumont back healthy in the backfield” Jacobson said following morning practice. “I like the feel I’m getting from this group too, they come ready to practice and so far they’ve been willing to be coached which can sometimes be a challenge. If we keep mentally tough I think we can have some success this year.”
“I can’t wait to get out there on two healthy knees and see what we can do” Beaumont said. “We’ve got experience in some good places like at quarterback and our line is really coming together so I think we can do some good things this season with the team we have here.”
Negaunee takes on Escanaba in a formal scrimmage Friday August 19th in preparation for their conference opener the following Friday. The scrimmages will be at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM that afternoon
The Miners can be heard home and away all season long with Mark Evans and Gregg Nelson on Sunny 101.9 WKQS.
