Marquette, MI – February 16th, 2020 – Tom Walker of the North Country Trail Association Hiawatha Chapter called into the 8th Day to talk about another upcoming hike held by the chapter.  This isn’t the first time Tom has talked on the 8th Day, the last time being in December, talking about the New Year’s Day hike the Hiawatha Chapter holds every year.

Listen:

A Federally designated hiking trail, the North Country Trail is the longest National Scenic Trail in the US, starting from the Appalachian Trail in Vermont and ending in the middle of North Dakota.  The North Country Trail Association works to promote the trail, while

maintaining and improving it throughout the year.  The Hiawatha Chapter likes to hold hikes for the public and get more people on the trail!  In the U.P. the trail starts at the Mackinac Bridge and runs up through Marquette and follows the north side the Upper Peninsula before running into Wisconsin.

Coming up on March 14th, the Hiawatha Chapter will be a holding a hike through the Great North Woods! To get to this location, take M-123 either north from Newberry or west from Paradise. West of the Upper Falls, CR-500 travels north off M-123. This dirt road is plowed all Winter but travel on it can be slow so plan some extra time. CR 500 is the road marked for Crisp Point Lighthouse (It isn’t plowed all the way to the lighthouse). The address above is for a private resort on the north end of Culhane Lake. They will be parking just before the entrance to that resort. Which is just east of the State Forest Campground on Culhane Lake.

You can find all the information about this upcoming hike on the North Country Trail’s Hiawatha Chapter’s Facebook page here.

If you want to learn more about different outdoor activities in Michigan, definitely take a drive down to Lansing for the Quiet Water Association’s Quiet Adventures Symposium!  The event is on Saturday, February 29th, and showcases “quiet”

outdoor sports including kayaking, running, hiking, biking, and more!  The Hiawatha Chapter will have a booth down there this year.  Make a weekend of it and drive down and learn about some great outdoor activities!

Next Wednesday, on February 19th, the Association will be holding their monthly meeting! You are welcome to go to learn more about the trail and what the Association does to maintain and preserve it.  You’ll also hear about what they have planned for the future of the trail.  Every meeting is held at the Pure Country Family Restaurant in Rudyard, MI, you’ll be able to enjoy some delicious food while the meeting is being held.

Tom gave some good tips for hiking in the winter, like dressing in layers rather than big jackets when you go hiking to avoid sweating and stay away from cotton because when it gets wet it becomes very heavy and draws heat from the body. It’s the hardest to get started, but make a point to doing it, get the gear you need, and get on the trail!
