Miners vs. Miners – Negaunee Takes Down the Gogebic Miners 50-8 on SunnyFM

Bessemer, MichiganFriday, October 5th, 2018 – It was a chilly Friday night as the Negaunee Miners traveled to Bessemer where they demolished the Gogebic Miners 50-8. Negaunee also took home the Dick Koski Trophy to commemorate the first time the Miners have taken on the Miners. Mark Evans and Gregg Nelson were in Bessemer to bring all of the action live to 101.9 SunnyFM!

The first quarter started with a Negaunee kick to Gogebic. Gogebic was unable to make any magic happen, and Negaunee soon gained control of the ball. Not long after, Negaunee’s Theo Kumpula drove in the first touchdown of the game. The two-point conversion was missed, bringing the Negaunee Miners to a leading score of 6-0. Gogebic tried again to get on the board to no avail. Negaunee’s Peyton Anderson then went on to score the second touchdown of the game, with which the two-point conversion was good, bringing Negaunee to a leading score of 14-0. Negaunee’s Keegan Erva then went on to score a 47-yard touchdown, bringing the score to 22-0 as the first quarter came to an end.

Negaunee dominated in the second quarter, with quarterback Jason Waterman kicking the quarter off with an 81-yard touchdown! The kick was good, bringing Negaunee to a 29-0 lead. Peyton Anderson went on to score his second touchdown of the game not long after, with a good kick by Erik Salminen which brought Negaunee to a mid-quarter 36-0 lead. Theo Kumpula then came back with his second touchdown of the game, paired with a good kick, bringing the score to a Negaunee lead of 43-0. After going back in forth in possession, Negaunee’s Ethan Brewer was able to get on the board with a touchdown of his own, bringing the score to a Negaunee 50-0 lead going into halftime. Gogebic was unable to score during the first half of play.

A running clock was put into effect as the third quarter started. Gogebic started moving the football well, getting two first-downs nearly back-to-back. As the quarter was winding down, Gogebic fumbled the ball but it was then recovered in the endzone by Gogebic’s Parker Wilson, bringing them on the board for the first time. A good conversion then brought the score to 50-8, with Negaunee still taking the lead into the fourth quarter.

The running clock continued into the fourth quarter. Neither team was able to get back on the board as the clock ran out, leaving the Negaunee Miners with a huge 50-8 win! Go Miners!
