Negaunee, MI – December 4th, 2018 – The Negaunee Miners girls basketball team was set to battle the tough Escanaba Eskymos in Negaunee as the season was just beginning. The Negaunee Miners started the game off right when they took control of the ball on the first possession of the game, but Escanaba scampered out to an early lead. After some intense play, the Negaunee Miners were able to take their first lead of the game late in the first quarter. Abby Nelson and Chloe Norman were stand out players for the Miners, and they helped secure Negaunee’s lead going into the end of the first half after building up a nice lead.

With a bit of breathing room between themselves and the Escanaba Eskymos, the Negaunee Miners girls looked ready to shut the door on Escanaba. All they had to do was maintain consistent defense, and they were able to do that spectacularly through much of the second half of play. The Eskymo’s stand-out player, Lexi Chaillier, was held to just seven points throughout the game. By the time the final buzzer sounded, the Miner girls defense held strong to take home the win. Chloe Norman, a senior, had 17 points on the night with nine rebounds, and senior Abby Nelson, who earned player of the game honors, had a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
