Houghton, MI – Friday, December 7th, 2018 – The Negaunee Miners girls basketball team traveled to the western end of the U.P. Friday night, where they took on the Houghton Gremlins in Houghton. It was a cold night, but the Miners brought the heat, beating the Gremlins 65-33. Jesse Anderson was there to bring you all of the calls on 101.9 SunnyFM.
The game began with the tip-off being won by Negaunee. The Miners took the early lead, and even held an 11-3 lead with only five minutes left in the quarter. They increased their lead to 14-3, but fouls against the Miners then led to the Gremlins closing the lead to 16-9. The clock signaled the end of the quarter just as Houghton fouled, allowing the Miners to take three free throws. All three were good, bringing the first quarter score to a 21-16 Miners lead.
The Miners ramped up the intensity during the second quarter, gaining a 11-point lead of 31-20 with 4:16 to go. Negaunee held this lead for a while, eventually bringing their lead to 34-22. The Gremlins struggled to close the gap, giving the Miners the 36-22 lead going into the third quarter.
The second half of the game was when the Miners really starting opening the lead. The fouls remained 2-2 during the third, with Negaunee taking the huge lead, 49-27, going into the fourth quarter. The Miners kept on sinking baskets, gaining a 55-30 lead only a few minutes into the quarter. The Gremlins struggled to keep up, only scoring 6 points during the entire fourth quarter. Negaunee walked away with the 65-33 win, bring their record to 2-0. Great job, Miners!
