Negaunee Miners Boys Basketball Falls to the Iron Mountain Mountaineers 54-42 on Sunny 101.9FM

Iron Mountain, MI January 22nd, 2019 – The Negaunee Miners Boys Basketball team traveled to Iron Mountain on a snowy Tuesday night to battle the undefeated Mountaineers. Jesse Anderson had all of the action on Sunny 101.9FM!

1st Half:                                                                                                          

The battle between the Miners and Mountaineers started off to a fast start, as the game was tied at 4, with 6:30 remaining in the first quarter. Negaunee would take an 8-4 lead, the Miners were off to a good start on the road. Iron Mountain was all over the offensive glass, but they couldn’t capitalize on the second chances. Negaunee would build their lead up to 14-8 quickly, as the Miners were playing good defense in the opening quarter. Iron Mountain ended the quarter with momentum however, as they scored five straight points. Negaunee led unbeaten Iron Mountain by three points heading into the second quarter.

Iron Mountain carried its momentum into the second quarter with six straight points to take a three point lead, including a dunk that put the crowd into a frenzy. Negaunee couldn’t get anything going offensively, as the Mountaineers had all the momentum. The Miners would score their first points of the quarter to cut Iron Mountain’s lead to 19-18. The offense would slow down for a couple minutes, as the Mountaineers led 21-18 with two minutes remaining in the half. Iron Mountain would continue to roll, as five straight points put them up 26-18, which forced a Negaunee timeout. The Miners were staying in the game throughout, and trailed Iron Mountain 26-20 at halftime.

2nd Half:

Both teams would trade baskets to begin the second half, as Iron Mountain led by six with six minutes remaining in the third quarter. The Mountaineers would score five straight points to take an 11 point lead halfway through the third. Negaunee started to get cold from the three-point line, partly because of the Iron Mountain defense. The Mountaineers would work their lead up to 16 points late in the third quarter, as they tried to pull away from the Miners. Negaunee was trying to hang in the game, but they had a lot of work to do as they trailed by 19 points heading into the fourth quarter.

End of 3rd: Iron Mountain Mountaineers 43, Negaunee Miners 24

Negaunee would start the fourth quarter off with a three, cutting Iron Mountain’s lead to 16. The lead would stay at 16 for a couple minutes, as both squads were trading baskets. Negaunee wasn’t giving up, as they would score five straight points to cut the lead to just 11 points. Negaunee was making things very interesting late, cutting the lead to eight points. However, they were forced to play the foul game, and the Miners were running out of time. Negaunee gave a valiant comeback effort late in the fourth quarter, but the Mountaineers were smart with the ball, and made their free throws. Iron Mountain would stay undefeated, as they defeated the Negaunee Miners by a score of 54-42.
