Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball Falls to the Gladstone Braves 43-39 on Sunny 101.9FM

Gladstone, MIJanuary 29th, 2019 – The Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball team went on the road for a second consecutive game, as they traveled to Gladstone to take on the Braves. Jesse Anderson had all of the great action from Gladstone on Sunny 101.9FM.

1st Half:

The Miners got off to a good start, as they led 3-0 after their first offensive possession. Gladstone responded quickly, and took a 4-3 lead. Both teams were trading early runs, as the Miners would jump out to an 8-4 advantage, the offense was fast paced for both teams. The high-tempo offense continued, and Negaunee led Gladstone 13-9 in the closing minutes of the first quarter. Negaunee would score a late basket to take a 15-9 lead into the second quarter.

Both teams started off slow to begin the second quarter, as there weren’t any points by either squad in the first two minutes of the quarter. After a few minutes of no points, the Miners led the Braves 17-10 halfway through the second period. Negaunee’s lead would reach double digits for the first time, as they led 20-10. Both teams would trade baskets, as Negaunee led 24-15 with under a minute to go in the first half. Two late free throws by the Miners would extend their lead to 26-15 going into halftime.

2nd Half:

The Miners would strike first in the second half, as they led 28-15. Negaunee was starting to pick up the pace, and they began to click on both sides of the court. Gladstone would battle back, and found themselves down only eight. Negaunee would score to extend their lead back to 10 points, but another Gladstone run cut the lead to only five points. The Braves cut the deficit to three points late in the third quarter, but a deep three-point shot at the buzzer gave the Miners a 36-30 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Gladstone would opening up the scoring in the fourth quarter, as they trailed Negaunee 36-32. The game was scoreless for the next couple minutes, as Negaunee kept their four point lead with five minutes remaining in the game. Both teams were trading buckets once again, the Miners led 39-36 over the Braves. The defense picked up in the fourth quarter, as both squads couldn’t get anything going offensively. With one minute left in the game, Gladstone would knock down a shot to cut their deficit to only one point. It looked like Negaunee was in complete control in the third quarter, but now there was a barn-burner going on at Gladstone Area High School. The Miners missed a big free throw, and Gladstone capitalized with a basket to take a one point lead with just 16 seconds left. After a crazy sequence of both teams trading turnovers, the Braves would get the ball in bounds and the clock started to drain down. The Miners would get called for an untimely intentional foul that sent the Braves to the free throw line, it proved to be a crucial moment in the game. Gladstone would make three of their four free throw attempts in that span to put them up by four points. Negaunee only scored three points in the fourth quarter, and that proved to be the catalyst of Gladstone’s comeback. The Gladstone Braves pulled off the home upset against the Negaunee Miners 43-39.
