Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball falls to the Marquette Redettes 51-50 on Sunny 101.9FM

Negaunee, MI February 19th, 2019 – The Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball team took the court on Tuesday night, as they hosted the Marquette Redettes in a huge match-up! Jesse Anderson had the call between two of the Upper Peninsula’s best teams on Sunny 101.9FM!

1st Half:

After a slow start for both teams, Marquette led Negaunee 3-2 with six minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Redettes led 7-4, both squads were having their fair share of miscues early in the game. Marquette started out the game shooting the ball pretty well, and they found themselves up 11-6 as the end of the opening quarter was near. The remaining three minutes of the quarter featured both teams trading basket after basket, and the Redettes led the Miners 15-9.

The Redettes were controlling the paint early in this game, and this wasn’t a common occurrence considering the Miners’ tremendous size inside. Marquette was scoring at will, but Negaunee was answering every basket. The Redettes led 22-13 however, and that forced a Negaunee timeout. Marquette picked it up on defense, as they were stoning Negaunee on that end of the floor. The Miners ended their offensive dry spell with a basket, however they still trailed 24-15 with two minutes to go in the first half. A Miners three-pointer cut Marquette’s lead to only six, they were playing much better in this two minute stretch. The Redettes quickly extended their lead back to 12 points, they were playing a good game thus far. Marquette led Negaunee 30-18 at the half in this hard-nosed rivalry game.

2nd Half:

Both teams traded baskets to start the second half, as Marquette led 33-23 with just under seven minutes remaining in the third quarter. Negaunee came out of the locker room playing much better, as they cut the lead to 33-27. The Miners were very engaged on the defensive end, as they forced three Redette turnovers in the first minute of the half. Negaunee also began to pound the ball on the block, using their size advantage to score in the paint. Marquette was hanging on to a 36-31 advantage with three minutes remaining in the third quarter. Off a quick run, the Redettes’ lead was back to double digits. Both squads were trading baskets once again, and Marquette led after three quarters of play, 43-35.

End of 3rd: Marquette Redettes 43, Negaunee Miners 35                

This game was turning into quite the battle, as Marquette led Negaunee 47-40 with under seven minutes remaining. The Miners quickly cut the lead to 47-44, and they had made this a game after trailing by double digits in the second and third quarter. Marquette led Negaunee 47-46 with four minutes to go in the game, this is what rivalry games are all about. Both teams tightened things up on defense, as the Redettes have struggled with Negaunee’s full court trap defense in the second half. Marquette scored a basket to take a three point lead, and they forced a huge turnover on the defensive end. The Redettes had the ball with a three point lead and there was only one minute on the clock, Negaunee was forced to foul. The Miners had fouls to give, so no free throws were shot, and they got a steal! They were fouled on the other end, and they had two free throws of their own. Negaunee missed both free throws with 50 seconds left, the deficit was still at three points. Marquette had a four point lead after a free throw, and they got the ball back once again after a Negaunee miss. The Redettes couldn’t capitalize at the charity stripe, and the Miners cut the lead to 50-48 with just six seconds left. Negaunee had one last chance to tie it up, as they trailed by three. Marquette took away the open three-point shot, as the Miners scored a layup, but all that did was the cut the deficit to one. The Marquette Redettes survived a big Miners’ comeback for the 51-50 road win.
