Negaunee Girls Basketball Takes 37-29 Road Loss to Gwinn on Sunny 101.9

Gwinn, MIFebruary 18, 2020 – It still might be February, but there was a March preview in Gwinn on Tuesday night. Two days after it was announced that the Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball team would play Gwinn in the first round of the Districts, the two teams squared off in a game that saw the Modeltowners pull the upset 37-29. The Miners were on the wrong side of the score tonight, but will get another crack at the Modeltowners on Monday, March 2. Jesse Anderson was live from Gwinn High School with the call on Sunny 101.9.

A sluggish offensive showing is how this game would be described, both teams were off to a slow start. Five minutes into the game, the score was 6-5 in favor of the Miners after a bucket from Chloe Norman. Alyssa Hill had a good first quarter for the Miners in a limited scoring game with six points. Norman chipped in with four points, but Gwinn held the lead. After a Hill basket to tie the game at 10-10, Marissa Delmont drew a foul and made a basket with five seconds left for the and-one. Her free throw was good, and the Modeltowners led 13-10.

Hill scored once again down low, cutting the deficit to one point, but that would end up being Negaunee’s only basket in the entire second quarter. Gwinn tried to take advantage, but only mustered four points in the quarter. The Miners had only two scorers in the first half with Hill’s eight points, and Norman’s four. Gwinn had a much better balanced scoring effort with five Modeltowners scoring points, including Delmont and Lena Pleaugh with five points each. After a very low scoring second quarter, and first half in general, Gwinn led 17-12 over Negaunee.

Hill opened up the second half scoring, cutting the Miners’ deficit to 17-14. The offense picked up in the third quarter for both teams, but both squads were still stuck in the mud on the offensive end of the floor. Emily Curtice had a big and-one for the Modeltowners, extending the lead to 20-14 with six minutes left in the third. Negaunee had to answer back to stay in the game, and they did just that. The Miners went on a quick 6-0 run, sparked by a layup from Larissa Anderson, to tie the game up at 20. Delmont came back for Gwinn with a nice drive to the basket, giving the Modeltowners the lead back. Pleaugh hit a 3-pointer to give Gwinn a five-point lead, but Lilly Nelson responded with a 3-pointer of her own. Curtice scored the quarter’s final points in the last minute of the third, giving the Modeltowners a 27-23 lead.

The Miners looked to hit its stride in the fourth quarter and take the lead, but Gwinn had other plans. Negaunee scored only two points in the first five minutes of the quarter behind one free throw each from Hill and Morgan Carlson. The Modeltowners took advantage of Negaunee’s scoring drought this time, taking a 33-25 lead. To make matters worse for the Miners, Hill picked up her fifth foul, Negaunee’s biggest threat had to watch the remainder of the game from the bench. Delmont made one of two free throws, extending the lead to 34-25. Norman scored a bucket for Negaunee to cut the lead to 34-27 with less than three minutes left in the game, but the Miners’ tough scoring night was too much to overcome. Negaunee battled in the final minutes, but the Modeltowners hung on for a 37-29 upset victory. Hill led Negaunee in scoring with 13 points in the losing effort. The Miners drop to 13-5 on the season, but have two huge games upcoming against Westwood and Marquette to try and change the tide.
