Negaunee, MI – November 4, 2019 – The Negaunee Miners’ volleyball team lost their district quarterfinal match against the Manistique Emeralds by a score of 3-1 on Monday night. Both Manistique and Negaunee came into the matchup having recorded very good regular seasons, which made for an exciting match at Lakeview Gym.
Manistique had the game’s opening serve, but Negaunee capitalized on an Emeralds error to record the first point of the match. Manistique answered on the ensuing point, and quickly went up 5-2, and then 7-3 shortly thereafter. The Miners kept the set close for nearly the entire way, but Manistique pulled away near the end to take set one 25-16.
The Emeralds got the opening point this time around, and again, Manistique controlled play early on in the set. Negaunee was able to stay competitive, but despite a late point streak, they were too far back to catch Manistique, who went on to win the set 25-15.
Down two sets to none, Negaunee had their work cut out for them in the third frame. The Miners were able to keep their momentum from the end of set two for a while, going up 10-4 at one point, but Manistique was able to regroup and push back to make it close. The Miners held a slim lead for most of the set, and with a few Emeralds mistakes, Negaunee was able fight off a late Manistique effort and take the third set 25-23.
Manistique still led two sets to one to begin the fourth set, and the Emeralds got back to their attacking ways quickly. Negaunee fought hard and managed to keep the score close, aided in part by quite a few unforced Manistique errors. Despite their mistakes, the Emeralds managed the game quite well, and took the fourth set 25-14 and the match three sets to one.
