Negaunee, MIDecember 3, 2019 – After a long offseason, the Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball team got back to action with a 60-15 win over the Manistique Emeralds at Lakeview Gym on Tuesday evening.  Jesse Anderson, the voice of the Negaunee Miners, was happy to be back in the booth calling all the action on Marquette County’s Sunny 101.9.

The Manistique Emeralds won the opening tip and opened the scoring on the game’s first possession, but they didn’t follow this fast start with any sustained pressure.  Neither team was able to score for around five minutes after the initial bucket, but after a plethora of missed and blocked shots, Negaunee’s Lilly Nelson hit a three-pointer to give the Miners a slim 3-2 lead.  Nelson hit another three about a minute later to put Negaunee up 6-2, and it was with less than a minute left in the first quarter that shots started to fall for both teams.  After a closely contested opening quarter, Negaunee led Manistique 9-4.

The Emeralds had possession to begin the second frame, but it was Negaunee that got off to a quick start, extending their lead to double digits within the first minute of the quarter.  Manistique seemed unable to build momentum, turning the ball over several times, and Negaunee brought the score to 20-4 before Kayla Muth put the Emeralds back on the board with a short basket.  The Miners were still firmly in control of the game, as they did a good job of keeping possession and pressing Manistique’s defense.  At halftime, Negaunee had run their lead to 25-7.

The Miners kept their offensive momentum going as the second half got underway, scoring the first 8 points of the third quarter before Muth again scored for the Emeralds to make the score Negaunee 33, Manistique 9.  However, the Emeralds were not able to make any significant progress toward lessening the deficit, and after three quarters of play, Negaunee led 45-11.

Manistique fought back in the final stanza, but again, it was the Negaunee Miners who controlled the play.  Before long the Miners had extended their lead to 40 points, which initiated the running clock, and from there Manistique just could not get any offensive production.  The final few minutes went by fairly quickly, and Negaunee got the win in their season opener by a score of 60-15.

The Negaunee Miners‘ next game on Sunny 101.9 will be on Friday, December 6, when the girls travel to Gladstone to take on the Braves.  That game will start at 7:15 P.M., so make sure to join Jesse Anderson for all the action on Marquette County’s Sunny 101.9 or online at sunny.fm.
