Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Northern Michigan University President Fritz Erickson joined the SUNNY Morning Show with Walt & Mike today to talk about some of the budgetary challenges the university is currently facing.
Erickson said NMU is using a multi-level approach in an attempt to address a $2.6 million dollar shortfall this year on campus due to a decline of 423 students.
That plan includes aggressive recruiting strategies to get more students, increasing the university’s presence in K-12 school systems in the region and financial belt-tightening across campus.
He added that the financial challenge based on the enrollment declines is nothing new as there has been a steady drop in high school graduates around the the country, and the situation at NMU is not unique.
Erickson also talked about a program he is launching this week that he calls “Rumor Has It”.
It is an effort to address several of the erroneous rumors he is hearing from the campus community about possible cuts and program discontinuations in light of the current budget issues.
