Marquette, MI – (02/04/20) – Marquette Area Public Schools Superintendent Bill Saunders joined Mark & Walt in the Morning today to share an update on the effort by the MAPS Board of Education that is considering the possible dropping of the Marquette Senior High School nicknames of Redmen and Redettes.

Saunders said the process is ongoing and the board is continuing to gather public opinion about the proposed discontinuation of the name.  He added that the last two board meetings have run several hours with people speaking out on both sides of the issue during public comment.

Saunders explained that the board has not set a timeline to make a final decision on the matter, and to set an arbitrary deadline for the process would be a disservice to the district, it’s students and the community at large.

  1. The Mining Journal sports pages continue to use the Redmen and Redettes names. They could well change the reporting and help find other names, please. We need to make changes…many reasons have been expressed. I don’t listen to radio reports…hope they have made the changes! We all need to work together on this very significant community problem.
