USDA Rural Development Funds Two Upper Michigan Projects

Marquette, MISeptember 24, 2020 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded $3.6 million for water system improvements in Munising and Manistique through the agency’s Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant Program.

Jason Allen, State Director for Rural Development in Michigan, joined Mark & Walt in the Morning today to discuss the projects and the funding.

Allen said Munising will receive a $648,000 loan and a $1,852,000 grant to replace part of the city sewer main under a section of M-28 that was installed in the 1930s. The project will be leveraged with a $5 million M-DOT grant to replace paving and provide ground restoration to the sewer main work.

Allen added that Manistique is receiving an $800,000 loan and a $300,000 grant for sewer main replacement under US-2 on the west side of the city after the area collapsed near the Manistique River.
