Marquette County’s Superior Bike Fest has been canceled. At a press conference in Marquette this afternoon, event officials said they have decided to not hold the Bike Fest this year due to a low number of competitor entries.
As of earlier this week, only 58 riders had pre-registered for the event. According to Jim Grundstrom, event coordinator, there are usually well over 200 riders registered for the Bike Fest at this time. Grundstrom added that he could not explain why the numbers were so significantly down this year, and the decision to pull the plug was based on simple economics.
The Superior Bike Fest has been held in late June for the past several years and has featured a popular criterium race in Marquette that has attracted several thousand spectators to the downtown. The Bike Fest has also featured road and mountain biking races across Marquette County.
Officials were unable to say if they would consider holding the event again next year.
