Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Marquette County authorities responded to a pair of kayaking accidents yesterday.
Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a capsized kayak on Bass Lake in Forsyth Township around 3:00 p.m.
57-year-old Susan Lafreniere of Gwinn was kayaking with one other person when her kayak flipped due to high waves.
She was unable to get back in the kayak or swim to shore due to the rough conditions.
The other person was able to get to shore and call rescuers, who safely pulled her from the water.
Marquette firefighters were later called to the Black Rocks area of Presque Isle Park just before midnight to rescue two unidentified men who were stranded on a rock near the shore after they had flipped their kayaks.
Rescuers rappelled about 50 feet down the cliffs to get the men to safety.
They were evaluated at the scene and released.
