Gwinn Man Charged for Hit and Run Accident on 4th of July

MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – A Marquette County man charged as the driver in a Fourth of July hit and run accident in Marquette that claimed the life of one person and injured another is scheduled to appear in court later today.

30-year-old Luke Eugene Huotari of Gwinn faces a preliminary hearing later this afternoon on two counts of knowingly leaving the scene of an accident causing serious injury or death.  Huotari was arrested by police as the suspected driver of the car that struck and killed 42-year-old Karin LaChapell of Marquette.  Her 38-year-old husband, Bryan LaChappell, was seriously injured in the accident.

Huotari faces up to 5 years in prison and a $5,000 fine on each count.
