MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The National Park Service is starting a new planning process about the use of personal watercrafts on Lake Superior within the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
The new process is needed after a federal court ruling issued in 2010. The Park Service prepared a previous regulation to allow PWC use at the park.
In July of 2010, a U.S. District Court ruling concluded the current analysis was inadequate. The new process will produce a analysis that could result in a plan continuing the current PWC use, expand use along the Pictured Rocks shoreline, or a total ban on PWC use within the park.
The planning process will begin with public sessions in Grand Marais, Munising, and Marquette later this month. A final decision is expected in 2013.
