MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – State Police at the Negaunee Post say the driver of a vehicle involved in a hit and run accident yesterday evening at Sawyer has been located and taken into custody.
The accident happened around 8 p.m. in the parking lot of the Shoppette Store when 27-year-old Elizabeth Kohtala of Gwinn was hit by a 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier and knocked to the ground. The driver then fled the scene.
Witnesses say the incident stemmed from a disturbance at the store parking lot. Kohtala was taken to Marquette General Hospital for treatment and was later released.
Authorities located the driver of the car later in the evening in Forsyth Township and he was arrested on charges of operating while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident and driving while license suspended.
The name of the driver is being withheld pending his arraignment.
