MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The Michigan Department of Community Health has selected the YMCA of Marquette County as one of 10 agencies in the state for a pilot program to help address childhood obesity in Michigan.
The program is aimed at improving physical activity and healthy eating for children in kindergarten through sixth grade.
Health officials say the $915,000 in grant funding will help school and community programs improve the health of children by increasing physical activity, providing nutrition education and offering a safe place to play and exercise during the grant period that will extend through September 30, 2013.
It’s for programs that take place before school, after school and in the summer.
