Lansing, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – A resolution by State Representative John Kivela supporting upgrades to the Soo Locks has been approved in Lansing.
The measure supports a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers study considered crucial to advancing construction of a second large lock at the locks in Sault Ste. Marie.
Kivela says the larger lock is needed because only one of the four Soo Locks is large enough to accommodate the modern vessels on the Great Lakes.
The Marquette Democrat says the locks are important to the state’s economy as a whole because so much commerce is shipped through the locks every year.
A similar measure, co-authored by State Senator Tom Casperson, is under consideration in the State Senate.
