Michigan DEQ Not Issuing Permit for Co.Rd. 595

Michigan DEQ not issuing permit for Co. Rd. 595MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality says it will not be issuing a permit for a proposed road in western Marquette County.

In a letter released yesterday, the DEQ says they will not be issuing a state permit that is required in order for the construction of County Road 595 to begin.

The proposed roadway would connect US-41 in Humboldt Township with the Triple-A road in Michigamme Township and would be used for hauling ore mined at the Rio Tinto Eagle Mine to a processing site at the Humboldt Mill location.

According to the letter, the DEQ will not issue the go ahead because a deadline of January 4 in an Environmental Protection Agency permit was not met due to the complexity of the federal permit.

According to the project’s original timetable, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will now assume permitting authority for the project.
