Great Lakes Radio NewsMARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)The battle continued in Lansing yesterday over a proposal by an Upper Michigan lawmaker that would limit the power of the Department of Natural Resources to unilaterally manage parts of state forests under the effort to promote plant and animal biodiversity.

Landowners for years have complained that the power of the state has prevented them from making a living on things like logging and motorized recreation.

Environmentalists told sponsors in a Senate committee Thursday that the bill, authored by Republican State Senator Tom Casperson of Delta County, threatens the biodiversity of Michigan, and can have long term negative effects on the environment.

Sponsors disagree, saying both landowners rights and the environment are both protected under the legislation.
