MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Winter storm warnings are in effect for Ontonagon, Gogebic, Keweenaw, Houghton and Baraga counties until 8 p.m. tomorrow and Alger, Luce and Northern Schoolcraft counties through 8 a.m. Thursday.
Heavy lake effect snow will develop through Wednesday night. Snow totals in the eastern U.P. by early Thursday will range from 8 to 18 inches with the greatest accumulations north of M-28 and east of Munising.
Expect snow accumulations of 10 to 24 inches in the western U.P. with up to 2 feet over the higher terrain south of Houghton and west of Baraga. Northwest winds gusting to 25 to 35 mph through Wednesday evening will create areas of blowing snow, especially in open areas near Lake Superior.
Driving may become hazardous as conditions worsen across the region.
