Great Lakes Radio NewsMARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)The effort by a group trying to prohibit a wolf hunting season in Michigan enters a new phase today.

The coalition calling itself “Keep Michigan Wolves Protected” says it will submit 240,000 signatures, that they hope will result in a ballot question that could throw out a law that allows the state to schedule a wolf hunting season.

Supporters of a wolf hunt say the animals have become a threat to Upper Peninsula farmers’ livestock. While wolves were once on the endangered list, their population has recovered, with more than 700 now in the UP.  But opponents of a wolf hunt, which include the Humane Society of the United States, says 700 is not very many, and a wolf hunt will result in a reversal of efforts to bring back the species in Michigan.

If the Secretary of State confirms there’s at least 161,305 valid signatures, then the new law allowing the state to schedule a hunt would be on hold until the November, 2014 election.
