Seasonal job cuts pushed unadjusted unemployment rates upward in all of Michigan’s 17 major labor market areas in January. According to the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget, total employment and labor force levels fell in nearly all of regions during the month. The Ann Arbor area had the state’s lowest jobless rate at 5-point-6 percent while Northeast Lower Michigan had the highest at 13-point-8-percent. The rate for the period in the U.P. was 10-point-5 percent while Marquette County’s rate was 8-point-4 percent. Michigan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in January was nine percent.
The Marquette County Sheriff’s Department says the search for a missing Marquette Township woman is over. Marquette County authorities say they were able to locate 26-year-old Wendy Michelle Mansuy last evening and she was located in good condition. She had last been seen by friends on Friday the 16th. The Marquette County Sheriff’s Department is thanking the public for their assistance during their search for Mansuy.
Marquette Attorney Cathy Church has announced her intentions to run for Marquette County Probate Judge. In a statement released today, Church says she filed her paperwork this week for the race and turned in the required nominating petitions to be placed on the August 7-th primary ballot. The signatures were deemed to be valid by the county clerk. Church, who served as an Assistant Marquette County Prosecuting Attorney for 14 years, is a partner in the local law firm of Church and Korhonen, PLLC. Church says she is looking forward to visiting with residents in the county during her campaign. The position of County Probate Judge opened up with the announcement in late February of the retirement of current Probate Judge Michael Anderregg.
The Chippewa County Sheriif’s department is currently investigating a breaking and entering at a residence in Pickford in the eastern U.P. The incident was reported last night around 6 o’clock at a home on Dewey Street when the homeowner was in the shower and heard a door open. The homeowner saw a man in a black hooded sweatshirt and a black ski mask in his home. The suspect fled the scene on foot and deputies searching the area were unable to track him down. Anyone who may have any information about the break-in is asked to contact their nearest law enforcement agency.
A Michigan State Police trooper was wounded and a passenger in a car was killed in an early-morning shooting today in downstate Saginaw. Reports say the trooper was shot around 2:15 a.m. today after a traffic stop on the city’s east side. The trooper, whose name has not been released, was hospitalized and was last listed in stable condition. Police say an unidentified 24-year-old passenger shot at troopers, who returned fire. It is not known at this time what led to the traffic stop.
