Negaunee, Michigan December 11th, 2015 – The Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball team were at home tonight to host the Houghton Gremlins. Jesse Anderson and Brady Guilbault were there LIVE on Sunny.FM to bring you all the exciting action.
The Negaunee Miners won the tip to start the game, but it was the Houghton Gremlins who scored the first points of the game, to take the early lead. Aleda Johnson was quick to answer back for the Miner with a deep two point to tie the game. With the quarter half over Clara Johnson scored a three point shot to give the Negaunee Miners a 11-6 lead against the Houghton Gremlins. Abby Nelson scored the Negaunee Miners 2nd three point shot of the game near the end of the first, to give the Miners a 14-6 lead. The Houghton Gremlins interior defense was excellent and were able to stop some drives from the Miners, to end the first quarter tied 14-14.
The Houghton Gremlins showed great offense to start the second quarter and took their first lead of the night 16-14. The Negaunee Miners played strong throughout the second quarter and took the lead back 21-19, with a basket from Courtney Finnila. Both teams played a great ball game in the first half of play, but the Negaunee Miners pulled out the lead 26-21 against the Houghton Gremlin to end the second quarter.
The Gremlins started the third quarter with possession and the first basket to trail 26-23 to the Miners. With 3 minutes played in the quarter, Aleda Johnson scored her second 3 point shot to give the Miners a 29-23 lead. The Gremlins and the Miners were closely matched and the game was tied 32-32 with quarter half over. The Negaunee Miners found some fire in the last minutes of the third and had a great run, to include Aleda Johnson’s 6-6 shots on the basket to give the Miners a 44-34 lead.
The Houghton Gremlins started the fourth quarter of play with a quick run and reduced the Negaunee Miners lead to 44-43. The Negaunee Miners started to pull away from the Gremlins half way through the fourth quarter and a led 53-45 with one minute left in the game. The Negaunee Miners pulled out the win tonight 59-47 and Aleda Johnson was the Tino’s Pizza player of the game aiding the Negaunee Miners win with 29 points. The Negaunee Miners improved their record to 3-1.
