Negaunee, MIJanuary 2, 2019 – The Negaunee Miners Varsity Girls Basketball toppled the Calumet Copper Kings with a 52-35 win tonight on Sunny 101.9.

Calumet started the game with a 5-0 undefeated record this season while Negaunee was 4-2 on the season. The Miners had a slow start against the Copper Kings, though they stayed within striking distance of Calumet. In spite of a slow start, Negaunee trailed by just one point at 8-7 behind the Calumet going into the second quarter.

Lilly Nelson  put up a triple to start the second quarter and gain a 10-8 lead for the Miners. A turnover gave the Miners a chance to extend that lead to 12-8 in the early going as Negaunee found their legs in this game.

Some action under the bucket!

Calumet was able to regain the lead, but the Miners stayed right with them. Morgan Carlson then went to the line to go one for two to tie it up at 17-17. Negaunee was able to capitalize on that little bout of momentum and end the half up 21-17 over the Copper Kings.

Negaunee held tight to their lead at 25-19 with four minutes to go in the third quarter. The Miners were able to stay out front at 30-25 heading into the final quarter of play. Chloe Norman started the fourth with a double to improve the Miners to 32-25.

Two Alyssa Hill buckets, who had 18 points for the night, put Negaunee at 39-28 for their largest lead of the game thus far at eleven points ahead of Calumet.

It was relatively smooth sailing to a Miner victory for the rest of the period. The final score of 52-35 showed an ability to open up a tight game when it mattered most.
